County of Jacksonville issued the following announcement on Apr. 5.
April is the Month of the Military Child and the City is honoring our military youth on Purple Up Day. Traditionally held on April 15, we wear purple on this day to show support for military youth. The Freedom Fountain will also be lit with purple lights tonight in celebration of our military youth.

Award-winning author Robert Jacob will discuss new findings about Blackbeard at Jacksonville Branch on April 19. The event includes a Q&A and book sales, set against recent data showing local student readiness rates in science, reading, and math.
Jacksonville will host a public ceremony honoring local youth named as semifinalists for the Military Child of the Year Award on April 17. Seven students from North Carolina were selected among nationwide applicants for their achievements within military families.
The Onslow County Public Library will hold its annual Comic Book Fest on May 16 at its Jacksonville Branch location. The event features cosplay, workshops, panels and local vendors aimed at bringing together fans and fostering creativity amid ongoing educational challenges faced by area students.
