The City of Jacksonville announced on May 13 that applications are now open for the 2026 New River Institutes, a set of free educational summer programs aimed at local high school students.

The institutes are designed to provide hands-on learning experiences in Art & Media, Leadership, and Science. Organizers say the goal is to inspire and engage students by offering direct interaction with professionals in each field.

According to the announcement, the Art & Media Institute will run from June 15–18 and introduce participants to various artistic mediums such as photography and painting. Students will work alongside experienced artists and media professionals during this program. The Leadership Institute, also scheduled for June 15–18, will help students develop communication, teamwork, and leadership skills through activities with community leaders. The Science Institute is planned for June 22–26 and will include visits to an aquarium and Possumwood Acres as well as canoeing activities led by professional scientists.

All three institutes are offered free of charge through the City of Jacksonville. Applications are open until May 31, but space is limited.

The city encourages interested students and families to apply soon.
