County of Onslow issued the following announcement on Feb. 6.

The Onslow County Board of Commissioners proclaimed February 2023 as Black History Month in Onslow County during their regular meeting on February 6, 2023.

Commissioner Walter Scott welcomed representatives from the Department of Social Services Black History Month Staff Committee.

Each February we pause to reflect on the contributions of the African American community to our national and local identity and Black History Month allows us to learn more about this vital part of our Nation’s story.

As a result of determination, hard work, and perseverance, African Americans have made valuable and lasting contributions to both our County and our state.

During Black History Month, all Americans are encouraged to reflect on past successes and challenges of African Americans and look to the future to continue to improve society so that we live up to the ideals of freedom, equality, and justice.
