Rep. Gable files bill in North Carolina House to allow tax deduction for National Guard pay

A new bill filed by State Rep. Wyatt Gable in the North Carolina House seeks to provide tax relief for enlisted North Carolina National Guard members by permitting deductions of certain federal pay from state income tax, according to the North Carolina State House.

The bill, filed as HB 384 on March 12 during the 2025 regular session, was formally listed with the short title: ‘Nat. Guard Tax Deduction for Fed. Pay.’

In essence, this bill allows enlisted members of the North Carolina National Guard, specifically those holding the rank of E-1 through E-5 and residing in North Carolina, to deduct their federal basic pay from their state income tax. This act will become effective for taxable years beginning on or after Jan. 1, 2025.
