Sen. Lazzara files bill in North Carolina Senate to revise CPA certification requirements

A new bill filed by State Sen. Lazzara seeks to update educational and experience criteria for CPA certification and rename the State Board of Accountancy, according to the North Carolina State Senate.

The bill, filed as SB 321 on March 18 during the 2025 regular session, was formally listed with the short title: ‘Accounting Workforce Development Act.’

In essence, this bill modifies the educational and experience requirements for certification as a certified public accountant (CPA) in North Carolina. It renames the State Board of Accountancy to the State Board of Certified Public Accountant Examiners and mandates updates in membership qualifications. To be eligible for CPA examination or certification, applicants must demonstrate they are U.S. citizens or residents, at least 18 years old, and of good moral character, holding a bachelor’s degree with a focus in accounting from an accredited institution.
