A new fire station puts 2,200 homeowners in the Hubert and northeastern Onslow area closer to emergency help and will give some of them a break on their insurance bills.
Onslow County purchased the former Swansboro EMS building and converted it for fire and emergency response. The proximity to the new station will also mean lower insurance rates for more than 600 Onslow homeowners. The station is expected to go online before the end of the year, once final inspection is completed.
Homeowner insurance premiums for 631 homes in Onslow are now subject to the highest ISO premiums. Being closer to emergency services means their ISO ratings will reflect the homes' new safer status..
The Freedom Way fire station is on NC 24 outside of Swansboro. It is a satellite of the Bear Creek Fire Station. It will handle fire and medical emergency calls. Once the station goes online, homeowner insurance rates could be adjusted in as soon as six months.
The Onslow County Board of Commissioners has made appropriate changes to the fire district map, which will result in lower ISO ratings for many.
There were 631 homes with a Class 10 or 9E ISO rating.
The ISO ratings for the homes will go down to Class 6, which is the lowest possible class for residential properties.
