TOWN OF SWANSBORO: Please join the Town of Swansboro in welcoming Fire Chief David Degnan

Town of Swansboro issued the following announcement on Aug. 14. 

Please join the Town of Swansboro in welcoming Fire Chief David Degnan. Dave will supersede Chief Mark Tessing as he officially retires from the Town on Friday, July 30. Dave was appointed as fire chief for the Town of Swansboro on July 1, 2021. He began his career in the fire service with the City of Sandusky, Ohio Fire Department in 1997 as a firefighter/paramedic. He was promoted to the ranks of fire lieutenant, fire captain, shift commander and fire chief. Over his career he obtained certifications as a paramedic, fire instructor, EMS instructor, and fire code enforcement inspector. 

He has attended numerous fire and EMS service training opportunities throughout the U.S. He served as the department’s training coordinator and administered all patient care medical reports and billing. As shift commander and chief, Dave directed operations at multiple fire and medical emergencies. He established and administered the department’s annual budget and worked with city administration and elected officials in the development of policies and legislation designed to improve fire safety for citizens, businesses and visitors of Sandusky. He served as an adjunct fire and EMS instructor at EHOVE Vocational School preparing students for certification as professional firefighters and EMTs. 

Dave retired from the Sandusky fire department in 2017 and moved to Jacksonville with his wife Rene’. He accepted a position as a firefighter/paramedic with Western Carteret Fire & EMS and was promoted to the rank of captain in 2019. As a captain he was in charge of the department’s quartermaster supply program, EMS continuing education training, North Carolina patient care reporting software, and narcotic inventory control and purchasing. 

Dave was born, raised and attended school in Chicago, IL. In 1985, he enlisted in the US Air Force and served nine years as a Security Police Officer. In 1994 he was honorably discharged and decided to pursue a career in the fire service. Dave and Rene have two daughters and a grandson. Dave is an avid runner and enjoys golf. Dave is very excited and honored to have been chosen for this position. 

Dave has also served as a part-time employee with the Swansboro Fire Department since December 2019. He enjoys his coworkers and the citizens and wishes to carry on with the hard work and improvements achieved under the leadership of Chief Tessing
