Town of Surf City issued the following announcement on Aug. 20.
The Surf City Utility Department will be smoke testing the sewer system on August 24, 2021, starting at 9:00 am. The areas affected will be between the 1900 block of N. New River Drive, N. Shore Drive and the North Topsail Beach town line to include portions of 5th and 6th street and all of 7th, 8th and 9th streets. During these times, the respective areas of town will have colored non-toxic smoke blown into the sewer system. The intent of this testing is to identify deficiencies in the sewer system for repairs. An additional benefit of this exercise is testing the functionality of sewer traps and vents within a resident’s house. In a sewer system that is functioning properly, smoke will escape from manholes and roof vents only on these areas. If smoke enters the home, the smoke will dissipate after a few minutes and is not harmful. However, this smoke will indicate deficiencies in a residence’s plumbing where sewer gases can also enter the house. It is advised to contact a plumber to rectify this issue if this occurs. If you have any questions or concerns about this scheduled testing, please contact the utility department at 910-329-1055.
