TOWN OF SURF CITY: Advance Meter Infrastructure Program (AMI)

Waterinstallation

Town of Surf City issued the following announcement on Jan. 12.

The Town of Surf City is embracing the newest technology with the Advance Meter Infrastructure (AMI) Program to keep labor costs low and to provide better service to all utility customers.  The AMI project will replace all existing water meters in town with the advanced meters over a 12-week period beginning January 17th.  With every utility account getting a new meter, all reads will be accurate within 99.98 percentile which will allow for a more equitable distribution to the cost of running the utility system.  The industry standard life for a meter is between 10-15 years and the last mass meter change out for Surf City was completed between the years of 2006 and 2010.  With this new technology, meter reads will automatically be uploaded and stored in a cloud drive every hour.  This prevents the need for Town personnel to visit homes as often and enables our team to have more efficient workflow and responses.  Additionally, the data in the cloud will be accessible for the Town and the account holder which will provide additional transparency to operation of the utility system.

The new meter program will include a customer portal that will provide account holders with the ability to budget their water usage. The portal will then send notifications to account holders if they are close to exceeding the budged amount if irregular activities occur. The system also allows the owners of rental homes to track short term rental water usage as one of the many benefits.

If you are a Surf City utility customer, you can expect to have work crews arrive on your property to change out your meter between January 17th and April 18th.  Contractors will arrive and knock on the door to request permission to begin work at which time you will experience service interruption for approximately 5 minutes while work is completed.  No boil advisory will be needed and minimal to no impact will occur to your property as all work will be contained inside the box.  If you are not home when contractors arrive, the work will be completed immediately.  If you have any questions regarding the AMI (Advance Meter Infrastructure) Program, please reach out to David Price at dprice@surfcitync.gov or 910-329-1055 ext. 500.  We appreciate your patience as we work to better serve your utility needs.
