City of Jacksonville issued the following announcement on Dec. 20.

With colder temperatures and rainstorms in the forecast Thursday night, flash flooding and freezing rain or slippery conditions are possible on the roadways.

We want to remind our Citizens and visitors of the following safety tips for traveling in winter weather:

-Slow down for conditions and do not start or stop suddenly.

-Remember, bridges and overpasses freeze first - use caution on bridges when driving in freezing weather.

-Plan for extended travel times and do not rush.

-Turn around, don't drown! If the road is flooded or blocked off for flooding, turn around and find an alternate route.

-Drive slowly in icy or slippery conditions. Some roads can become glazed with black ice in freezing weather, which is extremely slippery and dangerous to drivers.

-Check the forecast from official sources such as National Weather Service before heading out.

-Pack an emergency supply kit in your car that includes non-perishable food, water, blankets, flashlight and tools.

-Winterize your vehicle and complete routine maintenance before embarking on long trips for the holidays. Check oil levels, brakes and lights before you leave.

-Check road conditions and have multiple ways to receive weather alerts such as through the radio and your mobile phone.
