City of Jacksonville issued the following announcement on Dec. 20.

With just two days until Christmas and temperatures below freezing on the forecast for this weekend, we hope everyone is staying warm!

In freezing weather, remember the following safety tips inside and outside your home:

Never leave space heaters unattended and always keep heaters clear. Do not place clothing, towels or other objects on your space heater.

Do not heat your home using your oven.

Dress in layers and wear a hat, coat and gloves and stay warm, especially if going outside. Wind chill can make freezing temperatures even colder.

Remember to keep a winter emergency kit in your car that includes blankets, tools, flashlight, non-perishable food and water.

You can prevent freezing pipes by opening the cupboards under your sink and insulating your water heater.

Exposed pipes are at risk for freezing in cold temperatures, wrap any exposed pipes in insulation and know where your water meter is.

Don't forget about pets in cold weather-bring them inside and keep them warm and dry.

You can receive important emergency alerts through our Jacksonville Connect system at
