Born August 25, 1946, in Richlands, North Carolina
Charlie Sanders was born on August 25, 1946, in Richlands, North Carolina. His family later moved to Greensboro, where he attended Dudley High School. Sanders played football at the University of Minnesota before being drafted by the Detroit Lions in 1968. He played his entire NFL career with the Lions until 1977. He was selected to seven Pro Bowls and named All-Pro three times. He became known for his blocking and pass-catching ability. In 2007, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. After his playing career, he worked in broadcasting and scouting for the Lions. He later became the team’s assistant director of pro personnel. Though he spent most of his life in Michigan, Sanders was born in Richlands. His early years in North Carolina were the beginning of a long and successful football career.
