This week in Onslow County history.

Died July 2, 2015, age 68, Hall of Fame tight end

Charlie Sanders died on July 2, 2015, at age 68. He was born in Richlands, North Carolina, and later moved to Greensboro. He played college football at Minnesota and then joined the Detroit Lions in 1968. Over a ten-year career, he became one of the NFL’s top tight ends. He earned seven Pro Bowl selections and was named All-Pro three times. After retiring, he worked in broadcasting and the Lions’ front office. He led efforts in scouting and player development. In 2007, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Sanders also supported youth education and health through his foundation. Though he spent most of his life in Michigan, his birth in Richlands began the path that led to a career in professional football. His achievements on and off the field continue to be remembered.
