Town of Surf City issued the following announcement on Sept. 29.
Ian will continue to track toward the Carolinas and the storm will bring a variety of impacts to the area today and tonight. Ian is forecast to make landfall along the SC coast as a hurricane (Category 1) later today. Surf City is in a Hurricane Watch, Tropical Storm Warning, and Storm Surge Watch. The Town has implemented a State of Emergency as of 6 p.m., Thursday, September 29th and is currently operating at a Level 1 – Full Activation at the Emergency Operations Center. Town offices and facilities are closed to the public, including the Surf City Community Center, however, phone lines will be active. For non-emergency police matters you may call (910) 328-7711. Impacts are predicted to be the following:
- Potential for wind 39 to 57 mph
- Storm Surge of 2’-4’ (inundation associated with the high tides during Friday are expected to be the worst during this event)
- Rainfall totals 4”-6” with isolated higher amounts possible (heaviest rainfall is expected during Friday and Friday night)
- There is a Slight Risk (2 of 5; the risk for isolated tornadoes will increase during early Friday morning and persist through Friday night)
Certain roadways in Town may become impassable due to flooding, so please plan accordingly. South Shore Drive remains passable, however, If sustained winds reach or exceed 45 mph over a 2-minute period, travel over the Surf City Bridge is strongly discouraged. Anyone who drives over the Bridge while these conditions are present will be doing so at their own risk.
