Residents in Jacksonville can now ride city transit for free until further notice.
The mayor and city council approved the new decision on April 10 as funding from the Federal Transit Administration has become available due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In addition to not charging transit fees, a new route known as the blue route is now available and it will connect more of the city with the current transit system. This route provides connectivity to employment sites, education sites and grocery stores.
The city of Jacksonville is still following directives from the state and the Centers for Disease Control by making sure that people are practicing social distancing and staying at home as much as possible. For those that need to leave their homes for essential activities, transit will be free. Transit drivers are provided with masks, gloves and hand sanitizer for their own safety.
