Onslow County will start construction in January on 7.7 miles of new bike trails that begin at the county government building.
The Burton Park Trail will serve for mountain bikers and cross-country runners, WNCT reported on Sept. 29.
The project will include two trails, a 5-mile long trail and the 2.7-mile loop trail that begins construction in January.
Code Enforcement Officer Eric Walden suggested bike trails when he was named to a county committee directed to propose ideas for improvements. After spending most of his life riding bikes, he was limited in Onslow County because he said there are no places to ride.
“This is something that we currently don’t have and we’re always looking for new ways to provide opportunities to our residents to stay close to home and to be able to stay in our county and meet the recreational needs and take advantage of what the county has to offer,” Ben Warren, assistant county manager, told WNCT.
The first trail section should be completed by the middle of 2021.
