COUNTY OF ONSLOW: Notice of Real Estate Assessed Property Value

Notice

County of Onslow issued the following announcement on Mar. 7.

By now many property owners should have received a letter from Onslow County sharing newly assessed property values. North Carolina law requires counties to periodically reassess values to more closely match the current market value.

Should you disagree with this newly assessed value there are multiple ways to be heard. You can request an informal hearing with the Tax Office, have a formal hearing with the Board of Equalization and Review, or appeal to the NC Property Tax Commission.

To strengthen your appeal it would be helpful to have a recent copy of a fee appraisal from within the last year, pictures to show conditions inside and outside at the property, or comparative sales in the neighborhood.

A higher assessed value does not necessarily mean your taxes will go up. The Onslow County Board of Commissioners is in sole control of any adjustment to the tax rate to match the revenues needed to operate the County. This will not happen until budget deliberations are finished and the County Commissioners make decisions about the revenues needed.
