County of Onslow issued the following announcement on Mar. 28.
The Onslow County Board of Commissioners will meet in a regular session at 11AM, Monday, April 4, 2022 in the Commissioners’ Chambers at the Onslow County Government Center, 234 NW Corridor Blvd, Jacksonville, NC.
Two public hearings for rezoning land in the Sneads Ferry area and a request to overturn a previous decision of the Board of Commissioners to close the Richlands Mobile Convenience Site are before the Board for Commissioners for action.
The two rezonings are the topics of two public hearings where the public can speak on the requests. The first is from Joseph B. Martin who is asking for a rezoning of about 7.6 acres of land off Wilmington Highway or US17. It would rezone the property from Highway Business to Rural Agriculture. The site is currently used for residential purposes, and the rezoning would allow that use.
The second rezoning request is to rezone about 17 acres of land on the south side of Old Folkstone Road from Residential 5 zoning to Highway Business zoning. The property is owned by Sneads Ferry Investments and is bounded by existing Highway Business zoning and High-Density Residential zoning. The future use could accommodate business and some residential uses.
In December, the Onslow Board of Commissioners voted to close the mobile convenience sites located in the areas of Richlands, Hubert, Nine Mile and Belgrade due to the lack of revenue generated at each of these sites. The sites are currently scheduled to close the first week of April.
Some feedback has protested the long drive to the Landfill for disposal of trash from the western-most portion of the County. A proposal has been advanced to open the site for one-day a month which will before the Commissioners for consideration.
The Commissioners are also expected to receive the annual plan for the Juvenile Crime Prevention Council. The plan is required for funding programs every two years.
Two grants are also before the Commissioners for action. One is the Emergency Management Capacity Building Grant which would help provide Emergency Management offices throughout the state with funding to assist in the development of additional local emergency management capacity. The funds would be used to provide a back-up system for cybersecurity and to replace outdated portable communication systems. The grant if accepted would provide $259,000 to the County.
The other grant from the National Association of County and City Health Officials would provide additional efforts to build membership within the Onslow County Medical Reserve Corps. That grant is for $5,000.
Three proclamations are scheduled to be presented: One for Public Health Week, another for Child Abuse Prevention Month and a third for National Public Safety Telecommunicator’s Week. After the last presentation, 13 Onslow Telecommunicators will receive honors for saving lives and assisting with a childbirth. They are to receive a certificate and pin.
Consent items presented for approval at the time of the agenda adoption include tax releases and refunds and the monthly tax collectors report, past meeting actions and action to provide for alternate members of the Board of Equalization and Review.
The action for the Board of Equalization and Review allows for their duty to hear appeals on property values. The action reminds property owners who may wish to appeal their property value that once the Board of Equalization and Review adjourns, no further appeals can be heard about property values.
The meeting also has a place for public comment where Citizens can address the board on any issue upon which the Board Commissioners has control for five minutes.
