TOWN OF SURF CITY: Public Utilities - Smoke Testing - April 13th

Smoketestngsewer

Town of Surf City issued the following announcement on Apr. 8.

The Surf City Utility Department will be smoke testing the sewer system on April 13, 2022, starting at 9:00 am and lasting until approximately 5:00 pm. The areas affected will be between the 600 block of S. Topsail Drive, S. Shore Drive to the 500 block of N. New River Drive, N. Topsail Drive, and N. Shore Drive. This area also includes Wilmington Ave, New Bern Ave, Goldsboro Ave, Greensboro Ave, Blue Water Lane, the island portion of Roland Ave, Kinston Ave, Highpoint Ave, Raleigh Ave, and Durham Ave. During these times, the respective areas of town will have colored non-toxic smoke blown into the sewer system. The intent of this testing is to identify deficiencies in the sewer system for repairs. An additional benefit of this exercise is testing the functionality of sewer traps and vents within a resident’s house. In sewer system that is functioning properly, smoke will escape from manholes and roof vents only on these areas.  If smoke enters the home, the smoke will dissipate after a few minutes and is not harmful. However, this smoke will indicate deficiencies in a residence’s plumbing where sewer gases can also enter the house. It is advised to contact a plumber to rectify this issue if this occurs. If you have any questions or concerns about this scheduled testing, please contact the utility department at 910-329-1055.
